We spent Memorial Day weekend camped on the Kern River in the second best campsite ever. By the time I got up Friday morning, May 28, John had found a place by the river to set up camp. We had to pack everything in, but it wasn't too far. We set up two tents, one to use as a bathroom (we had brought a little porta-potty with us) and spent most of the day sitting on a boulder overlooking the river watching the rafters and kayakers brave the rapids. We read, made dogs and beans for lunch, and I finished another novel by Michael Connolly, one of my favorite authors.
On Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, we went into Kernville for the art fair and went to a very well done town museum. When we arrived back at camp, we had neighbors, and I don't say that kindly. Several families had moved in 'next door' and had cut down beautiful flowering stalks of yucca plants, which I had been admiring, to use as tent poles. We were not happy. How can people go to all this trouble to be outdoors and destroy the very things that make it so beautiful? Go figure.
